The Initial Consultation

The first appointment is an opportunity to discuss what brings you to therapy and what your hopes and expectations are. At the end of the appointment I will share with you an initial understanding of the problem and explain the treatment options. There will also be an opportunity for you to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have. Working collaboratively is central to my way of working and I endeavour to provide a safe, supportive and transparent space to facilitate this.

Attending an initial consultation does not commit you to ongoing therapy. Many people are unsure about starting therapy, and an initial appointment can help with making that decision. It will be your choice whether to book another appointment, or take some time to consider whether I am the right therapist for you.

You may be concerned and would want to know whether what you speak about in therapy will remain confidential. From the first contact, any information a client shares with me will remain confidential. The only exception to this would be if I feel there is a serious risk to your own or to another individual's personal safety, at which point I am required by the ethical codes of practice to inform your G.P. or other relevant agencies. Should such an instance arise I will make every effort to discuss my concerns with you in the first instance and any action taken will be with your full knowledge. During the initial consultation, issues of confidentiality are discussed, agreed and any questions that you may have will be answered.
